There’s a fight outside the window. Adversaries weaving cross purposes it seems.

The big one’ll win, says the kid from next door. Hmmm, I reply, unsure.

Legs pulled in under chin, tapping silky threads. Suddenly the little one moves in for the kill.

No, wait. That’s not a fighting gait. A Morse messaged through invisible web. Not here. Not now. Pedipalps at the ready for another perilous rush, this isn’t a deathly duel but more sex in the garden – with a final twist in the tale.

The male is careful to not become prey, aiming for mating – and living to mate another day.
