Common Dolphin | Mesmerising Moments

The first splash.

It was a wave, wasn’t it? Splash. A white crest of sprinkles on an ice-cream ocean.

“DOLPHIN!” Someone shouts. Splash. There’s a surge to the bow. My heart leaps. Could it possibly be? I climb higher; leave the crushes mad rush from port to starboard to stern to prow.

There’s something there. Choking joy crawls up from inside till I cry, “THERE’S SOMETHING THERE!” (A tiny prickle of nightmare fever – there are creatures under the water bigger than me.)

I’d seen it in books, in film on tv. But never like this.

Time, I plead, stop. Let me breathe in every morsel of this salty second. Cameras around me whirr and

I am mesmerised.

This picture was taken during this Mesmerising Moment on the boat back from Lundy Island off the coast of North Devon, England.

I was completely unprepared for it. Just makes me realise how little a lot of us know about the creatures and plants that are around us. I’d love to see more!
