Grey Squirrel | Mesmerising Moments

I wonder if he watches me too? Am I – laptop ablaze, coffee in hand – a break from the fevered pace of collecting acorns and raiding birdfeeders, in preparation for the winter ahead?

My squirrel friend – one of many – sits plump and ever-watchful on my balcony. As I write this, he appears to be gathering his thoughts, small head cocked. Purposeful. Reflective.

Much like me, I think with a grin.

I really should thank him. A constant companion. My daily dose of nature, always at the ready.

I have spoken to squirrels since I was old enough, well, to speak to anybody. As it turns out, they are  quite good at keeping secrets.

You see – they are good for more than just eating your freshly-planted bulbs or digging up your flower boxes. Quite a bit more, actually.

Today’s Mesmerising Moment and photograph are by nature nerd and playoutdoors Goddess, Bethe Almeras – who says if she hasn’t “laughed to the verge of incontinence, then it hasn’t been a good day. I believe in singing in the car, being kind to waitstaff, furry things, and that no amount of stuff will ever make you happy.”

And we totally agree when the Grass Stain Guru says – Childhood was MEANT to be messy.

You can read more fantastic articles about nature and play, and get lots of ideas for making your playoutdoors time more fun, on the Grass Stain Guru’s website. You can also follow Bethe on Twitter – balmeras.

Grey squirrels are not native to the UK, originating instead in the United States. Find out more about the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Scirus carolinensis) on the eNature website.
